Story of Easter Vegetable Tray

Updated: Apr 9, 2020

Palm Sunday is coming up fast. Have you been wondering how to tell the true meaning of Easter to your kids? Make a healthy veggie tray interesting by transforming the vegetables into a story of Jesus's death and resurrection.

I recently had the opportunity to tell my 4 year old daughter why we celebrate Easter. She thought it was about getting presents and baby chicks. This was a really fun way for her to understand the true story of Easter!

I bought a veggie tray from Walmart for just over $5 that had a variety of veggies that I knew I could transform.

Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King

I started by cutting snow peas into palm fronds by making a slit at an angle down both sides of the snow pea. Now you can stop here and it would get the point across but I went a step further to accentuate the palm leaves. Below are examples of the cuts that I made.

They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”“Blessed is the king of Israel!” -John 12:136

The Crucifixion of Jesus

For the Crosses I used carrots for the criminal's crosses and celery for the main cross. I cut them kind of like a Lincoln log. Towards the top of one piece I cut out a divet with a paring knife. I did the same in the second piece only in the center. Then I laid them on top of each other and they stayed connected to each other.

"they crucified him there, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. Jesus said,“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” -Luke 23:33-34

Jesus Has Risen

To make the empty tomb I used a cucumber. I sliced a 1 inch thick piece and a half inch thick piece. I then scooped out the middle with a melon baller. If you cut off a small piece on the bottom cucumber it will keep them from rolling all over the plate.

"On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus." -Luke 24:1-3

My daughter really enjoyed the story of Easter and had many questions. It was great getting to read the bible and explain what things meant. Not only was it perfect quality time with my daughter, but she enjoyed a healthy snack in the process!
